National Play Festival - Tasmania

26 March–4 April 2009

The National Play Festival consists of a company of 23 actors (ten from Tasmania), 16 writers, five directors and two dramaturgs. It features six plays selected on merit from across the country. Actors, directors and dramaturgs shepherd the play from page to stage where an audience is crucial to their next steps. The Festival, however, is about more than just enjoyment of the new and the brave. It offers skills development sessions and the chance to turn your stories and ideas into opportunities. Ten days on the Island - Tasmania

Ten Days on the Island is celebrated as Tasmania's premier statewide cultural event. It attracts an audience of over 160,000 people at more than 40 locations across Tasmania. The multi artform program explores the cultural uniqueness of islands presenting international artists and acts from island locations alongside Australia's finest talent. Various locations.

Tilba Easter Festival - Tilba, New South Wales

11 April 2009

The 2009 Tilba Easter Festival will present live music, roaming street performers, street games with prizes, craft demonstrations, market stalls, food and festivities.

Bluesfest - Byron Bay, New South Wales

9–13 April 2009

Bluesfest has been the inspiration for dozens of blues world music and blues and roots festivals around Australia. It includes an array of blues music, world music, roots music, a hybrid of those and other cultural styles such as surf culture, Latino Music, African Music and political and environmental message artists. This year's line-up includes Paul Kelly, Xavier Rudd and Missy Higgins. Belongil Fields.

Bengali New Year Celebration - Sydney

18 April 2009

The 2009 Bengali New Year celebration, the Boishakhi Mela, features flavours and aroma of the food from the Bangladeshi culture, A fashion show and clothing, spices and other goods which can be purchased at stalls. There are rides for the children, cultural programs, dancers, poets, musicians and fireworks. Sydney Olympic Park.

The Surry Hills festival will feature four live entertainment stages including a fashion show with DJs playing between shows. The Festival will feature music acts, children's workshops and activities, a sustainable food feature, dog shows and art, craft and fashion stalls. Prince Alfred Park.

Acoustica Festival - Sydney

19 April 2009

The Acoustica Festival is Sydney's urban acoustic festival of performing arts and music showcasing local talent and national artists, concerts, carnival rides, wandering performers and a variety of food stalls. Birchgrove Oval.

K'OzzieFest - Mt Kosciuszko, Jindabyne & Cooma, New South Wales

17-19 April 2009

K'OzzieFest, a celebration of Polish culture in Australia, aims to connect two representative landmarks in Australia and Poland—the Kosciuszko mound in Krakow, Poland and Mount Kosciuszko in Australia's Snowy Mountains. A combination of music, poetry, song and dance, the K'OzzieFest also features an exhibition of iconic photographs. Various locations.

Ironfest - Lithgow, New South Wales

25–26 April 2009

Ironfest is an arts festival with a metal edge which celebrates working and playing with metal. Held annually in Lithgow on the closest weekend to ANZAC Day, Ironfest brings together artists, designer/makers, blacksmiths, performers of all kinds, musicians, historical re-enactors and machine enthusiasts and hobbyists from all over Australia, and the world. Koroit Irish Festival - Koroit, Victoria

1–2 May 2009

The Koroit Irish Festival began in 1997 and has since grown to a celebration of the town's traditional Irish heritage. This festival celebrates Irish heritage through music, poetry, dancing, singing and spud picking. Live music is featured at indoor and outdoor locations through the town and participants will find markets, street performers and live acts along the main street and on the village green. Koroit.

Arts in the Valley Festival - Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales

1–3 May 2009

The second biennial Arts in the Valley Festival will feature an art exhibition in the form of painting, drawing, indoor sculpture, garden sculpture and children's work by members of the community. The festival will combine classical and fine contemporary music with painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, poetry and drama. Kangaroo Valley.

Caxton Street Seafood and Wine Festival - Brisbane

3 May 2009

The Caxton Street Seafood and Wine Festival promises seafood, wine and a line up of entertainment featuring Blues and Jazz recording artists across three stages and contemporary mainstream Pop Dance Rock. Caxton Street.

Newtown Flicks Festival

The Newtown Flicks Festival is based in the Inner West of Sydney with the aim of supporting, assisting and showcasing Australian film makers by providing a venue for their films to be shown, not only to new audiences, but also to their peers. New Theatre.

Carnivale - Port Douglas, Queensland

22–31 May 2009

For 10 days and nights, the festival of Carnivale takes over the seaside resort village of Port Douglas offering a chance to engage in free and ticketed events. There's the Macrossan Street Parade, a Seafood Extravaganza, The Four Mile Beach Day and brand new this year The Great Aussie Arvo Concert. The theme for the 2009 Carnivale is Icons of Douglas. 5–7 June 2009

Greenfest is Australia's largest free green festival. Commencing on World Environment Day, Greenfest aims to stimulate awareness and action for a low carbon economy by showcasing the best of creativity in industry and the arts. The theme for 2009 is Community Warmth Can Cool the Planet. The focus is on empowering people and their communities to become confident about taking action for change. Brisbane Botanic Gardens.

Creative Sydney - Sydney

Creative Sydney is a festival celebrating the wealth and diversity of the city's creative talents. In its inaugural year, Creative Sydney will feature a talks program and event series at the Museum of Contemporary Art, a Creative Futures conference and the launch of Creative Catalysts, a list of Sydney's creative pioneers. Cooktown Art Festival - Cooktown, Far North Queensland

14–16 August 2009

The Cooktown Art Festival presents the work of the local painters, sculptors, wood carvers, potters, photographers and other artists. Local musicians and poets will also perform and a poet's breakfast will be held for the general public. Various locations.

Spring Migration - Albury, New South Wales

1–6 September 2009

Minister Garrett announced funding for Australian festivals

Thirty-seven festivals around Australia will share in more than $497,000 under the latest round of Festivals Australia funding announced today by Arts Minister, Peter Garrett. Festivals Australia is an Australian Government funding program which provides funding for arts-based projects that enhance the cultural program of regional and community festivals.
